A song originating among
the people of a country or region, passed from one singer or generation to the
next by oral tradition, often existing in several versions and usually
characterized by a simple, powerful standard melody and stanza, descriptive
verses.
Most folk music was
originally by unknown authors and passed down orally from generation to
generation, but by the mid-20th century, many musicians began writing their own
songs in a folk style, giving rise to the contemporary folk music genre.
Folk music is one of the
genres of Bengali music. It is basically Bengal’s own music. The life of the
people of rural Bengal, happiness and sadness emerges in this music.
Bhawaya festival celebrates Bhawaya song, one of the traditional folk arts of North Bengal. Derived from the word 'Bhawa' which means 'vegetables were cultivated in the low lands', these songs reflect the experiences of rural life. The subject matter of Bhavaiya is based on the living reality of common people of North Bengal.
